The vast majority of the group will tell you to take the ladder line all the 
way to the tuner -- the proper way.

But, if you simply must use a balun, I would recommend the Remote Balun (TM) 
by The Radio Works.  In the past, I placed this balun  under the outside edge 
of my roof. Then, I merely ran the ladder line to the balun and coax for a 
run of bout' 10 ft. through conduit  to the antenna tuner. I used this 
antenna setup for 10-160M with no problem. FYI - I have no affiliation with 
The Radio Works, Jim, W4THU, just builds a good product(s).

Like you, I also run an Alpha 87A with a Hercules II as backup.
