Hello fellow TT's. The following question is mainly geared toward the low
band, contesting, and general DXing audiences of this group. In your
opinion, which of the following would generally make a better transmit
antenna overall for working DX on 160m (assuming exactly equal conditions
for each):
1. A full size (134ft) quarter wave vertical elevated 66ft and fed against
two, quarter wave, tuned radials each at 66ft.
2. A full size W0UN array (9 vertical four square as described on page 11-69
of ON4UN's Low Band Dxing, figure 11-78) made of nine full size (134ft)
quarter wave verticals each fed against three, elevated, tuned radials per
each vertical each at 10ft.
Which of the above would be better? Would they be the same, or have no
noticeable differences? Would the results be the same for 80m, assuming that
you would cut the verticals accordingly for a complete match on that band?
Meaning, would the same type of antenna that works best above for working DX
on 160m also work the best for 80m DX? Thanks a lot for reading and as
always, any help is appreciated.
