I recently had my 40-2CD down for some minor
mechanical repairs and some upgrades. Several years
ago I rebuilt the elements as per the W6QHS info. For
some reason I never did the modification to the
loading coils to eliminate the self-tapping screw
connection (DUH). Anyway, I modified all the loading
coils this time and found something interesting. On
three of the four coil assemblies, when I cut back the
shrink tubing cover, I found that the self-tapping
screws were badly rusted and there was corrosion
evident on the aluminum tubing. On the last coil
assembly, there was absolutely no rust or corrosion
and the hardware was bright and shiny, just like new!
All coils are of the same age and have been installed
for 8-9 years. All of this means absolutely nothing
but is at least interesting! The antenna is back up
and now I'm ready for the contests.
It's been well documented before but I'd highly
recommend that anyone with 40-2CD do the modifications
to the coils and elements when they have the chance.
Some of those screw connections were getting really
bad! BTW, I never did the boom modifications as I'm
using a Hygain boom and mounting hardware.
