I use a coaxial power plug inserted into the AC adapter input anytime I'm
not using the thing. This disconnects the internal (alkaline) batteries
completely. I measured the current, just for "completeness"--it is zero
on the 200uA scale. 

The NiCad/Alkaline switch inside the battery pack is OFF, of course.

A tether from the plug to the box would possibly be a good idea.
