    Is it necessary? No, but it sure makes the job easier. With your 5-yard 
pour, it'll move the concrete around easily - especially if the concrete is 
stiff (low slump number). The other option is to get in the hole and stand on 
the rebar cage with a shovel and move it around by hand - not my idea of a 
good time.
