I have had similar experiences. The only application for a GDO these days
seems to be making or checking traps.
I have never been able to make the 259 coils work. I once tried the thing
on a very high Q tuned circuit and got a very weak dip with the coil
centered inside the circuit being tested. Otherwise, those coils are
useless. I have not found anyone that has been able to make them do
something useful.
