[TowerTalk] What was his name

Back in the 50's when tube type TV's were coming of age, there
was an engineer who specialized in removing parts until the unit
barely worked?  I'm banging my head against the wall trying to
think who he was?  

Anybody out there know his name?

Any companies out there you know of applying this to antennas/ham
gear?

Who had the bright idea to use sweep tubes for finals?
