Actually, there is more than the tree to think about ...... namely, your
tower.  One way to avoid hurting trees is to use large screw-eyes.  The
treee just grows around them.  These are hard to install up high in trees,
so most people throw lines over limbs using various means of propulson.  I
have a lot of tall pines (130' or so) that need periodic maintenance by tree
climbers, so I just get them to put the screw-eyes in place.

As far as your tower goes, if you have things too secure at the tree, and a
heavy guage copperweld antenna wire, and a poorly guyed tower, the tree may
yank your tower down in a really unruly storm.  Depending on the size of the
tree, you should try to make the antenna movable at the tree end (using a
counterweight and pulley, for instance) or use a wire that will break before
damage is done to the tower.  With average size trees and a properly guyed
tower, the tower will likely withstand the force of a tree limb pulling on
the wire.

I don't have wires at the 130' level of any of the big pines, but the trees
are so big that in a storm I think the force exerted by the swinging tree
would be quite large.  Any average antenna wire should break if the tower is
well guyed.  At the 70' level the pines don't move much at all, so I have
never had a problem with the wire being yanked to the breaking point.

Speaking of trees and rope, I plan to suspend a dipole between my tower and
a tree. Any of you know the best way to tie the cable for the dipole to the
tree without harming the tree?
