here's my shoe tip:

I have Vietnam era Jungle Boots that I wear when I climb my tower. Got'em 
while on active duty years ago.

They have a steel plate for punji sticks (haven't seen any here in NH 
recently) and deep lugs that grip the rungs quite nicely.
