>From what I understand, if you "hard wire" the cable to the AC mains, then all this code stuff is germaine.  If you stick a plug on the "input" end (and simply plug it into a standard house socket) then it's treated as an extension cord of sorts.  Then (most of) the code issues go away (if they bothered you at all).

Plus, then, you can unplug it when you don't require AC at the tower.  Good for: safety, lightning.
