Re: [TowerTalk] Anyone comment on the MQ-4

The gain numbers appear to be a bit high.
The electrical boom lengths per band would
support those numbers in dBi but not dBd
(subtract 2.2 dB from the published numbers
and you should be close the the maximum
theoretical possible gain.

One glaring omission from their advertisement
is the SWR BANDWIDTH. With 6 bands on
a single Driven Element, the SWR bandwidth
has to be low.

They didn't mention the matching system either.
Assuming a split dipole feed, one has to wonder
about the gain. Usually a Yagi must be detuned
to achieve a 50 ohm feed impedance which reduces
the maximum possible gain.

That said, even a 6 band rotary dipole is a very GOOD
antenna. I love my 20M dipole fed with ladderline for
10 through 30M operation. It could be made as a rotary
dipole using bamboo and wire or insulated aluminum
tubing (old Mosley DE mounts are nice for this).

A better alternative is a 5 or 6 band 2L Quad. See
the W4RNL website for a good design.
