This is based on my memory of a history of psychology text from 30 years
back. Psychophysics is the "scientific" study of perceived differences.  The
founding father was Gustave Theodore Fechner.  His original experiments were
in the perceived difference of weights (how much could you increase the
weight someone was lifting before they realized there was an increase).
After that he moved on to experimental esthetics which was a really psycho
move.
