Back when I volunteered for and was assigned to a team putting thermal
protection tiles on the X-38 vehicle (the 7-person 'lifeboat' for the
International Space Station) being constructed at Johnson Space Center, our
team was taken to a shoe store in nearby Pasadena, TX, to buy work boots.
Since we would be working in a construction area, OSHA required that we have
foot protection (upper and lower), plus NASA was paying for them.  I got a
pair of IronAge boots.  They are steel-toed, above the ankle, and have an
extremely tough sole.  I have never felt my Rohn 25g braces through the
soles even after an hour or two on the tower.  The tough/hard uppers also
protect the ankles and top of the foot from scraping/banging against the
tower legs or braces.  AND they were very comfortable.

I used to use hiking boots.  While the steel-shanked sole worked fine, the
soft uppers were pretty well unprotected.  The IronAge protect my feet top
and bottom.
