What you have probably have there is *tinned* copper wire.
I use a electrical "contact cleaner", sprayed on a cotton ball and then
just rubbing it on the wire while turning the roller.  Use the same stuff
on
the roller bars, etc.  I usually end up cleaning the roller about once
a year, before "contest season".
