You might try looking for vibram soles instead of steel shanked soles.  That
was the material of my 30+-year-old hiking boots I used for tower climbing
for many years.  I never once felt a crosspiece through my shoes.  The boot
lacing hooks finally gave out last year .... way, way before the soles would
have.
