I can remember ALMOST 50 years ago in Ham Radio .. Got the 'radio bug'
50 years ago this month .. but am licensed only [!] 48 years now.
Towers? .. few and very far between ..
Antennas? .. WIRE !!!
Those who had 'yagis' .. wow .. fun to visit them and admire those
antennas! My first antenna was a folded dipole [STILL HAVE IT] made of
#10 copper wire with 8 inches phenolic spacers. Fed it with 300-ohm TV
twinlead. Worked on 7178.6 kcs. as a novice .. [remember xtal
control?].. worked WAS on that one frequency! Used the same antenna to
work DXCC on 40m, too!!!!
My first beam? .. 1957 .. 4-element 10m monobander at 15' [mounted on
the house chimney] ..
Now I'm looking at putting up 14 monobanders on four towers this year
!!! FOURTEEN ! ..
