It is also reprinted in the 18th edition of the ARRL Antenna Handbook on pg 
6-11.

Another way to plant radials is to use a shovel to cut a slit in the ground 
and lay the radial in the slit. It doesn't have to be deep just under the 
ground level is fine. That way the radial is safe from the lawnmower if you 
accidentally scalp the ground with the mower blades
