Look in the Radio Amateurs Handbook for step by step details.

Basically, you strip the braid and inner poly insulation, cut them to the
correct length, strip the center conductor, tin the outersheld and center
conductor very lightly and wipe with damp sponge or cloth if you get a
little too much solder (work quickly). The PL259 will screw over this
without using any tools, then solder the connector to the tinned outer
conductor through the 4 holes and then the center conductor. (you did
remember to put the screw shell on first didn't you? The hardest parts
while you are learning is to not apply too much heat when tinning or
soldering that will melt the poly insulation. Sounds like you are using way
too much solder to tin the braid. If you have too much problems tinning the
braid, as long as the braid is nice shiny copper (or already tinned on some
coaxes)you can just put the connector together and solder it directly
through the holes.

You know, the problem I often have with this technique is that I cannot
put the connector barrel on to the RG-213 if there's too much tinning.
The coax tends to twist and distort, and I can't really grab it with
pliers without damaging it.

So, what's the best way to put a PL-259 connector on? How do you hold to
coax still while rotating the connector barrel?
