Troy,
You have asked the biggest and most controversial questions in amateur
radio. Money is normally the limiting factor. 7/8" heliax is over kill
on HF it would be like using a Boing 747 for two passengers, but on VHF
it starts to become necessary and 440 essential.
Antenna question: multi band antennas are a compromise. With your tower
you have many choices, 160M and 80M bands many people use a vertical on
stand offs from the tower. The inverted "V" is the most popular for the
40M band a tri band yagi is the most popular for 10, 15, & 20M

Subject: [Towertalk] Newbie Question
Greetings -
I have been on the list for a while, and finally took my test (no code
tech, I'm still working on code). It appears I passed!
I have a 100ft freestander going up, it's a Rohn similar to a trylon.
Here is a few questions.
First, antenna? I'm more concerned about working as many bands as I can
with the limited space. Not knowing the different models available, I'd
like to get some suggestions.
Second, radio? Again, multiband. I have been looking at the Yaesu's on
ebay (ouch), but not knowing too much about them, I'm open to
suggestions.
Next, rotor. Seeing as this always comes up on this list, (thrust
bearings, other parts broken), can I hear from some of you who hasnt had
any problems?
Also, I'm looking at running 7/8" heliax between the house and the
antenna,
as the underground run would be close to 250', then another 100' for the
tower. Any comments on this?
73,
Troy
