An interesting thread.
In the wonderful "Technical Topics" column in the RSGB mag "Radio
Communication" it was mentioned that in the 30s the Brits did statistical
surveys of hf communications stations in the UK. Results showed clear site
advantage for the coastal locations.
England is fairly flat so there would have been little data from elevated
inland locations.
Must admit that the combination of slope, elevation and ocean foreground
does wonders at this QTH. Visiting Gs are blown away by the strength of
signals from the UK where the path is over water all the way via Bering
Strait.
