[Towertalk] FAA Approval

I went through this when I put up my tower because I am 1/2 mile from an
airport.

The applicable rules are in 77.13... I'll paraphrase:

1) any construction more than 200 feet high

2) any construction of greater height than an imaginary surface extending
outward and upward at one of the following slopes

  i) 100 to 1 for a distance of 20,000 feet from the nearest point of the
nearest runway of an airport having at least one  runway more than 3,200
feet long.
 ii) 50 to 1 for a horizontal distance of 10,000 feet from the nearest point
of the nearest runway of an airport having a runway no more than 3,200 feet
long.
iii) 25 to 1 for a distance of 5,000 feet from the nearest heliport.

You need to fill out an FAA "Notice of proposed Construction". If the FAA
approves it, you are assigned an FAA study number. You will use that number
to fill out an FCC "Application for Antenna Structure Registration". You
will also have to include a copy of the FAA determination that the proposed
tower is OK with them.

These addresses were valid as of 1997, which is the last time I had to deal
with them. Is it a pain in the butt getting FAA approval and an FCC
registration? Yep. Was it a help showing those documents to the city when I
went to get my building permit? You bet.
