Many zoning ordinances contain something like the following,
from the City of Yuma, Arizona.

"Exceptions to Height Limits: The provisions of this section
shall not apply to church spires, domes, belfries, cupolas,
monuments, water tank towers, fire towers, observation
towers, transmission towers, windmills, chimneys, smoke stacks,
silos, derricks, conveyors, flag poles and aerials and their
necessary supports...."

Are there any church steeples, power poles, flag poles,
water towers, etc. higher than 30 feet in town? Did they
all have to get a variance?
