First of all, I am a Broker, own my company and have trained and taught Real
Estate for many years. Some of this Realtor bashing comes from a complete
and total misunderstanding of what you should expect from your Realtor. Your
Realtor is NOT an expert in antennas nor should be expected to be. In fact
it is ILLEGAL for your Realtor to give you advice on matters pertaining to
anything involving legal or the interpretation of such, especially outside
their area of expertise. The Realtors job is to provide professional
services in finding and closing a home of YOUR choice. Our computer search
engines have no provisions for antenna restrictions.
I used my MLS service to find my home----Then I personally went to the codes
and zoning offices to get the information important to me about my towers.
This is YOUR job to satisfy your needs, NOT your Realtors. If you are
concerned about the interpretations of the many documents concerning
restrictions you need to hire your own attorney.
To make this simple: Allow your Realtor to do their job, help you find the
house of your liking, help you get it financed and closed. That and ONLY
that is their job. Once you have found a house, or a subdivision that you
like, write up the contract/offer "SUBJECT TO" your approval of "whatever
your personal concerns are", call an Attorney, express your concerns and
explain your needs and have them go over the restrictions. Your agent will
be happy to work with the Attorney in acquiring the documents you need.
You would not ask your Attorney to do the Realtors job so don't ask the
Realtor to do the job for you and your legal advisors.
I am personally insulted by some of the comments lumping Realtors as money
grubbing and lacking professionalism. I have always provided terrific
service and high standards of professionalism to other Realtors, agents and
customers, be they buyers or sellers. I have taught Attorneys about the Real
Estate business and have had books written about Real Estate by Attorneys,
crediting me with teaching them the Real Estate Investment business. So do
NOT include me in these baseless insults about "Realtors".
It is a fine industry with as many laws insuring professional actions and
personal integrity as those governing Attorneys. As far as the comment about
only caring about commissions--that is a stupid and irresponsible comment. I
have always taught new agents that what they earn is simply payment for a
job well done and completed. It is a byproduct of the quality of service
which they provide to their customers. Just like any other industry, there
are good, better and best Realtors--it is YOUR job to find one with whom you
have a comfort level.
My advice to you Realtor haters--go do it by yourself. I have found that it
is much better for all concerned to show your types to the door and deal
with intelligent, responsible and logical individuals who understand the
process and have reasonable expectations.
Last comment: NO Realtor should EVER interpret any legal documents for your
benefit. This is stretchable to them practicing law without a license and is
illegal---so don't ask them... get out of your recliner and do some legwork
yourself...this is your hobby...not theirs.

Can someone who has W2PV's book tell me what he says is the nominal
free-space gain of a 2-element 40m DE/reflector yagi on an 18 foot (roughly
.27 wavelength) boom? I'm doing some modeling of a shortened yagi with
that boomlength and want a point of reference.
Thanks!

Please understand that my original comment and my forwarding of this
one come not from a grudge against real-estate agents, but from a
desire to share with other hams what I and my fellow TowerTalker
learned in the course of shopping for a tower-friendly QTH. My
experience was eye-opening. It would have helped me, and saved me a
lot of wasted time, to have been told these things in advance.

Many zoning ordinances contain something like the following,
from the City of Yuma, Arizona.
"Exceptions to Height Limits: The provisions of this section
shall not apply to church spires, domes, belfries, cupolas,
monuments, water tank towers, fire towers, observation
towers, transmission towers, windmills, chimneys, smoke stacks,
silos, derricks, conveyors, flag poles and aerials and their
necessary supports...."
Are there any church steeples, power poles, flag poles,
water towers, etc. higher than 30 feet in town? Did they
all have to get a variance?

I had good luck with a real estate agent helping me find a QTH here in
central IA with no antenna restrictions. He just happened to be a ham
(W0DQ). Maybe that helps or I was just lucky this time.
