Right on Bud,
just consider masts on the sail boats. If guying it was so wrong, you would 
not see the masts reinforced with 4 way guy wires that start at the same 
point at the bottom, are spread out a bit at the center and come back to a 
point at the top. Angles are really steep and this type of guying has been 
around before Towertalk. Isn't that stronger than bare mast alone? Why do 
they do that if it doesn't help?

Looks like some old wives tales from those who never calculated or analyzed 
the situations.

Anyone wants to verify it practice, put some strain gauges on the legs and 
you will see!
