well, by golly, and gosh darn, I can beat that tale of neighbors... and
I ain't even lived here my whole life yet, only about 20 years or so and
I still don't know most of the people in town... and even the cows don't
live here much, they all moved to the wide open spaces up in Ver-mont.

When I got ready to put up my first tower I asked a member of the zoning
board(k1rq at the time) what I needed, he said I didn't need anything
for a tower as they just rewrote the zoning ordinances and they didn't
say anything about towers.

After a while the tax assessors came by on an annual 'viewing' of the
town and I asked them if it was going to affect my taxes, they said if
it didn't have a roof and wasn't used for business they didn't care.

When I went to put up the second tower I knew the neighbors a bit better
and one of them used his backhoe to dig the holes for a case of beer.

Putting up the 3rd tower one of the neighbors came and helped put it up,
and a couple of them have helped since then on moving antennas and
stuff... I keep trying to get one of them who is an swl a license,
including buying a set of the ARRL books for the town library and
letting him study them on the way there via his wife. I do have a
neighbor with a bunch of broke cars, but I don't think any of them are
on blocks yet, and he helps with tower stuff also and watches my dog
when I go on trips. One of these days he'll move from the trailer into
his nice new log home it's parked in front of, but probably not till he
makes room for the cows to come back.

So neighbors and zoning boards aren't all bad... even after they rewrote
the zoning rules again to match up to some 'standard' rules they don't
mention towers. Of course if you read them literally you need a permit
to put up a doghouse, clothes line, or fence, but they don't enforce
that either. And I have put up 2 more towers since then with no
comment. Guess either I got real lucky or those who have found good
spots keep real quiet about them.
