When I replaced the awning on my RV, I salvaged the old aluminum
roller.  It was about 18' long and 3" in diameter.  By strapping a large
S-hook to the bottom, it them hooks onto and is supported by the tower -
the top end is tied to the tower.  It works well and is sturdy. 

Maybe your local RV place may be able to help you if you're willing to
wait for their next customer.
