    Shiny schminy - it's oxidation. You can clean off the oxidized layer with 
an abrasive pad but as soon as it's exposed to oxygen, it'll get a new 
oxidized layer on it. 

    The only place where you do want a nice, clean shiny spot is where the 
aluminum-to-aluminum joint is (be sure to use an antioxidant there). Other 
than that, it's primarily an aesthetic (or psychological) problem and only 
has minor implications to antenna performance.
