I would definitely use the loop, all in a horizontal plane, and make it 2 
full wavelengths on the lowest frequency of interest. At this length, you 
really start getting good lobes of gain. So for 40m, make it about 270 feet 
circumference if you have the room, and feed it anywhere with parallel 
feedline, using a tuner with balanced output.
You should get some great distance out of it on 40m and up. On 80m, being 
VERY low to the ground in terms of wavelength, you'll really slam the 
locals.
