Mine creaks (and pops) too, and it is the new design with sleeved joints. If
yours is this design (post 1995), tightening the bolts will not help because
there is minimum gripping pressure at the joints. All of the leg loads are
carried by the bolts, which are virtually a press fit. It is my belief the
creaking/popping is caused by minor changes in the alignments at the joints
due to the natural flexing that occurs in aluminum. In this more recent
design the bolt holes will NOT elongate because the bearing strength is well
below the point of deformation, even at rated wind loads. I know this
because I have reviewed the PE analysis of this design in great detail.

Tom,
This may have been addressed before on the reflector.
What you have is elongation of the bolt holes in the tower.
PLEASE, for you own safety, take down the tower and inspect ALL the bolt
holes, especially those INNER holes which are hidden from view.
I am certain that you will discover they are no longer ROUND, but
elongated, making for an UNSAFE condition.
Tightening the bolts will NOT improve the safety factor much, as the tower
will still be slipping in the joints due to that elongation.
How to eliminate the problem?  IMHO, you must place another bolt at each
joint where elongation has occurred, perhaps above, below, or between the
present bolts.
