Thanks to one and all for replies.  It appears that the antenna is fine, the balun is bad, intermittent.  So I have a kind volunteer from this group who is going to replace my balun with the Centaur one I got model B11Y10-50.  It is definitely a current balun, not a voltage balun like the one I put up mistakenly.  It is substantially larger and hardware looks better than the cheapo Van Gordon one I have been using.  So I guess I will be keeping the A3S a while longer and saving my money for a C3SS in the future due to all the favorable comments here.  And thanks the Chuck K0XM who so kindly offered to help.
