Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, published several articles regarding short vertical
antennas for 40, 80, and 160 meters in QST. Go to ARRL and search on
his name or callsign.

CQ Communications published a small book by Jerry, The Short Vertical
Antenna and Ground Radial. It summarizes his work.

He found 48 radials 16 feet long to be reasonably effective for
verticals of all heights.

One of his 40 meter antennas, which performed favorably compared to a
1/4 wave with an ample radial system, was only 6 feet tall. It was top
loaded to an impedance of about 12 ohms, which he fed with a 4:1 balun.

One of his 80 meter antennas was 22 feet tall.

One of the interesting antennas was a modified, but still functional,
beech unbrella.
