I like it better when they talk about lightening!!!
Come on everyone; read all about how lightning works on the Polyphaser
website. You'll read that there are actually two bolts that form. The
sky bolt which everyone thinks about and the ground leader that actually
comes up from the ground and meets the sky bolt about a 1/3 the way up.
A grounded structure is constantly bleeding away the static charge which
can build up enough to enable the ground leader to form. Of course,
even with the best grounding, Mother Nature can take over and do her
thang whenever and wherever she wants. A "properly" grounded system can
handle that and shunt that super energy into the ground before it gets
into the shack. But more often, a well grounded system will also shunt
any induced energy also to ground. Remember, that one doesn't need a
direct strike to have lightning induced problems. Phil KB9CRY
