Tim,

This all goes back to that free-lunch thing.

I'm sure properly tuned they work about the same as a Yagi
of the same boom length. The difference in gain and pattern
between an ideal quad loop and dipole is anywhere from
nothing to about 1dB maximum depending on height. It would
never be possible to have more difference by making one
BETTER, but it would possible to have a large difference by
making one worse through errors or flaws.

The only real difference is in the mechanics.
