I think it's important to remember that an antenna can only get gain by 
taking signals from some areas and combining them in a favored direction 
(hopefully)  You can not get gain in one direction without sacrificing it in 
another.  F/B ratio is a good example.

Anything done to add gain in a second direction, or change the radiation 
angle, be it another antenna of the same or different polarization, or 
different angle of radiation will affect the original antenna's pattern and 
gain and generally in unpredictable ways.
