Because at higher elevations, the air is thinner, there's less oxygen and
the brain starts to starve.  I always discuss my elevation "above seal
level," which uses the standard Pacific Seal as a reference.  The seals live
on the rocks, so there's a delta to actual m.s.l.  -WB2WIK/6

OK, I just have to ask.

Why do Hams use height above sea level since it is almost
meaningless for anything we are dealing with?

I see it for getting out at HF, VHF, and even wind survival
discussions.
