Bob - NX5M,

Thanks, so much, for the treatise on changing the scale. I am about to erect my tower and need to change the scale (from "S" to "N") plus add the Idiom-Press circuit. You have saved me from having to take extra steps to accomplish the deed.

73,

Tommy - K6YE

Seeking opinions regarding the use of these TV advertised Soldering Iron
(Cold Tip type). Runs on 4 AA batteries. How do these devices play in
cold weather and is it possible to solder items like PL-259 connectors or
radials at vertical bases? Heats to 500 degrees but within seconds, you
can touch the tip without danger.

Only $19.95 - is it too good to believe for ham type projects?

  Regards,

  Mark, K1RX

On the older control boxes you can take the dial face plate out and turn it
over. South center was on the other side. On later versions they gave a
  second
  face plate with south center.
There should be some south centered dials out there that no one used.

  1. Disconnect power.
  2. Remove the control cable....unless you have enough slack to work on the
  unit.
  3. Remove the top and bottom covers.
  4. Slip the lamp and holder off the lamp holder bracket and swing the
bracket clear of the wires leading to the circuit board.
  5. Remove the nuts on the meter studs to release the circuit board and slip
the PC board off the studs and pull it down under the chassis.
  6. Loosen the meter retaininig clips and remove the meter from the chassis.
  7. Insert something like a pen knife between the clear meter cover and black
housing at either corner on the top edge and pry the cover loose from that
corner. Repeat for the other corner. Meter cover should pop off.
  8. Slip a pen knife nder each corner of the lower edge of the white meter
scale and twist util the scale clears the two small indexing pins. Remove
the scale, turn it over and reinstall. (Make sure the scale fits over the
indexing pins and that it is flush and tight against the black housing.)
  9. Reinstall the meter, PC board and lamp holder/lamp. Make sure no wires
are pinched and then close it up.

  Bob NX5M

One big difference in the type wire used is the soil common in your
  area. For instance,
GA has very acid soil in my area, so copper is out of the question.

I use galvanized ground rods and insulated wire.

Well, the earlier models did not have the reversible scales - not sure when
it came in, but you still may be out of luck. If not the black plastic
later model cabinet, I doubt it would be there.

Mark, these things are useful for miniscule parts having no thermal mass,
like soldering a clasp on a piece of gold jewelry (if it's a small piece).
  Solder a PL-259 with it?

  Hahahahahahhahahahahahahhaha :-)

Forget about soldering something as heavy as a PL259 with one of those.
They are primarily intended for small jewelry pieces. Get a butane powered
iron instead. I have the Weller Portasol and Pyropen butane irons that both
do a good job in a non-windy outside area. The Portasol is made in Ireland
and is max rated 75 watts equivalent electric iron. The Pyropen is made in
Asia and rated 60 watts. Even though rated lower, the pyropen has more mass
at the tip and seems better suited for the PL259. But both will do the job
  quite well.

I want to block RF from possibly feeding back into a 12 volt DC power
supply. What is the best material for this available in a small toroid?
Will a one-turn winding be sufficient? Thanks in advance for your help.

Ferrite 31 mix seems to be a good one for chokes.
