I'm not sure why Gotham antennas get such a bad rap, at least not the 
verticals.  I used a V80 vertical as my only antenna for a couple of years back in 
the early 1960's.  I had a pretty decent radial field under it, added a variable 
capacitor to the supplied coil to help with matching on 10, 15 and 20, and it 
worked well everywhere but 80 where it was just too short.  

I think it worked just like a 23 ft vertical with base loading/matching 
which, of course, was just what it was!

I understand there were some significant mechanical problems with their yagis 
and quads.  Never owned one of those.
