After considerable research I went with the Oregon Scientific WMR968
Wireless Weather Station as the most cost effective. There are also
great public domain apps to tie it to the pc (Linux & M$)

Sorry we don't have a less costly simple weather station
answer for you yet but the thread is fun just the same.
Will keep my eyes open for what you need and will forward
the info should I find it.
Now that I have solved my weather station challenge it
is on to the tower-mount camera challenge!
