What's a balum?

If you mean "balun," a current balun, which can be an RF choke type wound of
the coax itself, is always a good idea to decouple the feedline and prevent
it from becoming an undesired radial.  If your vertical is ground mounted
and the coax is buried underground, this probably doesn't make much
difference; but in almost any situation, it can't hurt and may well help.
