Bill, the apparent difference is more than an S-unit (5-6 db?).  You'll be
radiating most of your RF in one direction, AND with the height above ground
you obtain with your tower, at a more advantageous (lower) angle.  That is
the potent combination that will make your signal stronger.  You'll also
hear better and reject those you don't want to hear.  You'll never want to
go back to an omnidirectional antenna again.
