You may find that computerized design has given us better optimized 
antennas, especially of the more complex antennas such as Yagis.  Very 
slight modifications give us trade offs of bandwidth, beamwidth, gain, 
and f/b ratio.  Each comes at the expense of others; what is best for a 
given application depends upon the application.  Go to Cebik's site for 
many hours of study of this aspect of antenna selection.  Get a copy of 
his article in the latest QEX for some specifics.
