I am doing a new install with about 36 wires going various places up the
tower, and buying the ICE or other commercial devices are getting expensive.

Bob,
Your observation of what is inside the various commercial boxes is the same
as mine, and I proceeded to build my own lightning protection devices. JAMECO
has a good selection of MOV's usually less then $0.60 ea. Note the voltages,
so as to be sure that the normal voltage on the lines you are protecting does
not exceed the limits. Most commercial boxes are rated only for low voltage
lines (less than 50v), and I was protecting 115v control circuits so the custom
design was necessary.
