For things like receiving antennas, why not use crimp on F 
connectors?  If you absolutely positively have to have PL-259s, you 
can get a F<>PL-259 adapter.  But there's no reason why you couldn't 
put a F connector on the antenna, use an F connector protector at the 
entrance, etc.  Might as well leverage the huge volumes that drive 
down prices for cable TV gear.  You can get chassis mount F 
connectors, PC mount, etc.
