Well, yes it is... using the stick and shadow method the first thing you
need is a LEVEL surface to track the tip of the shadow... So this begs the
question that I hear on the contesting reflector all the time... How do we
guarantee we have a level playing field??? That simple requirement seems to
perpetually elude that group of operators.

I think everyone should try several alignment methods.. not just for their
antenna, but just because it's fun and not particularly time consuming.
Especially the "stick and shadow" approaches.  It's easy to say, "mark when
the shadow is shortest".. much tougher to actually do it.
