One of many.

39" per meter.  39 X 600 = 23400/12=1,950 feet

If you fly the standard is in Nautical Miles for speed (knots) and distance 
or 6072 feet per nautical mile.
Once learned the metric system is so much easier, particularly when working 
with engineering or science.
BTW one nautical mile = 1.15 statute miles.
1 Kilometer = 3250 feet or 0.61553 statute miles
