Actually the trend over the last several years has been the adoption 
of the International Building Code as the state building code, 
enforced statewide, in most states.  See: 
<http://www.iccsafe.org/government/stateadoptions.pdf>

The IBC incorporates ANSI/TIA-222 by reference, so compliance with 
ANSI/TIA-222 as well as NEC is now required to obtain a building 
permit in most jurisdictions.
