I was looking for a paper on a lightning field simulator developed by 
some scientists at Erico (mfr of all sorts of lightning protection 
equipment) and turned up a lot of other interesting stuff.

In particular,

is a good discussion of modern theory on where and how many air 
terminals you need (talking about the problems with the old "cone of 
protection" and the "rolling sphere" methods).

One interesting development is a sort of coaxial cable designed for 
the lightning rod (air terminal) down conductor to reduce the "side 
flash" problem from inductance in the wiring:

There's also some papers on TVSS (transient voltage surge 
suppressors) that are of interest.
