Rich:

This is simpler than most people realize.

first, with all due respects to a fellow ham, don't go
by the airport manager. He is not the FAA and is not
responsible if dthere is a problem.

Simply do this:

1) download form 7460-1 from the FAA web site

2) fill it out accurately and completely.

3) send it to the FAA regional office that covers your
area. (You might need to enclose a "topo quad" map)

Thats it. The FAA WILL study, investigate and
determine the following for your Proposed install:

1) how high you can go IF there is a FAA limitation

2) Type of Marking and lighting IF required.

If there are no limits and no markings/lighting, the
FAA WILL note that on the returned Determination form.

This is your legal record that the FAA has studied it
and signed off on your proposed construction.

(A copy gets filed with the FCC when you do a towr
registration)

When you put up the tower, (according to the FAA
determination) you will need to file a 7460-2
stating that you built the thing.

It took longer to write this reply than it would take
for you to file the 7460-1 !

If you have questions, call your regional FAA. they
are always willing to help, and are some of the nicest
people around. I have dealt with them for years.

Good luck with your project and seeya on the bands...

and as always... 73!
