Greetings,
 
The manufacturing philosophy mentioned in previous  messages is called
"Just in Time".
 
We converted to it in my large company.  Inventory costs  went way, way
down, BUT if suppliers did not get their stuff to us in time,  our schedule
to the end customer would slip.  That  is when the VP's went nuts,
demanding that we restore schedule.   The results were lots of overtime,
"sick days", and ulcers by many.   Only a select few work in that
environment and come out un-afflicted.
 
Our customers (usually USAF) were told one delivery date, then  another,
then another.  I remember really getting in trouble for  advising the USAF
rep a "real delivery date".  Customer wanted to know why  he was always
lied to.
 
I was glad to leave and pursue another endeavor after 32 years  in various 
aspects of the business.
