I'm late on this, since I've been traveling (in Berlin). The 
technology used in series mode suppressors is such that they are 
practical only up to about 30A, at least with techniques that are 
now known. This limits their use to branch circuits (that is, inside 
the house after the breaker panel). 

Shunt mode devices (MOV's) are fine if they are installed properly 
at the service entrance, but can be a train wreck if they are 
installed anywhere else (for example, at equipment, in multi-outlet 
strips, etc.).
